James City County Police announces school zone speed camera installations

In more "Big Brother" news, residents will now be monitored by cameras to deter speeding through school zones.  Here are the details:

  • Installation Locations: Automated speed cameras will be installed at Norge, Stonehouse, D.J. Montague, Clara Byrd Baker, James River elementary schools, Toano Middle School, and Lafayette High School.
  • Installation Details: The process involves adding signs, camera hardware, and radar devices on roadways near these schools during daytime hours.
  • Program Overview: Part of James City County’s Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program, authorized in September 2024 with Blue Line Solutions, LLC as the vendor.
  • Purpose: Aims to enhance school zone traffic safety by detecting and citing speeding violations.
  • Program Start: Set to begin with the Williamsburg-James City County Schools’ new school year on August 25, 2025.
  • Warning Period: A 30-day warning period will follow activation, where speeding drivers receive warning notices by mail instead of citations.
  • Citations: Issued for speeds 10 mph or more over the limit, reviewed by a sworn officer, with a $100 civil fine (no DMV points or insurance penalties).
  • Enforcement Hours: Cameras enforce speed limits only when school zone flashing lights are active during scheduled hours.
  • Public Notification: ASE equipment will be clearly marked, with ample notice provided to the public.
