You can imagine the frustration of local workers who have been laid off due to the Governor’s mandated shutdown of non-essential businesses. But what is non-essential about providing for your family? Just ask any of the hairdressers, restaurant works, professional services or any other employee who has seen their pay cut or even been furloughed.
So what should Williamsburg, York and James City Counties do? Reallocate the Tourism Development Fund money collected from each taxpayer in the county. This money shouldn’t be going to help Colonial Williamsburg remodel bathrooms. Seriously, that’s what they are doing with taxpayer money. The Board of Supervisors and County officials should be willing to make this money available to furloughed workers.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU:
We are all just sitting in our homes, willingly taking what the Governor is dishing out. And as of yesterday he has said a fair amount of people in the Historic Triangle are to remain at home and unemployed until June 10th. Why isn’t there a greater outcry? How are we as a society willing to accept this?
We know what we need to do, and are willing to do it. But only to a point or more families will suffer. Those of us who are doing the right thing and sheltering in place are only waiting in line patiently for our turn at contracting the virus. That’s all we are doing . . . making the time until recover as a community that much longer.

What can you do? Learn more about the Tourism Development Fund and email appointed members of the Tourism Council.
Contact your Board of Supervisors, County Officials, Local legislative representatives and the Governor’s office and let them know you can’t shelter in place until June 10th. You have to provide for your family. We have to look at statistics and evaluate the cost / benefit for our community as a whole.
