The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), along with Allan Myers and Wagman Heavy Civil, is widening a 9-mile section of Interstate 64 (Segment C) in western James City County, from mile marker 233 to the James City/New Kent County line. This $174 million project, part of a $759 million I-64 Gap Widening initiative, adds one lane in each direction to reduce congestion, enhance safety, and improve travel and commerce. Work began in April and is expected to finish by fall 2027. Construction includes median lane additions, bridge widening, pavement replacement, and potential sound wall construction near Rochambeau Drive if supported by residents. Tree removal is paused from May 15 to July 31 to protect bat species, but other work continues. Most construction occurs during the day, with some nighttime lane closures. The Lightfoot Park and Ride lot will be resurfaced, and VDOT aims to minimize disruptions. More details are available at shorturl.at/hO5Wi, and questions can be sent to I64GapWidening@allanmyers.com.
