Local Voice – JCC Residents Don’t Want a New Government Center

"We went to war against England because it wanted to tax us without allowing us to participate in the decision. Here we are under the banner of freedom 250 years later, and the JCC Board of Supervisors has taken a page from King George III. The supervisors have decided on their own to make the people pay $50 million for a new library that there is no need for, on top of a $189 million government center that still leaves offices at the current Mounts Bay government center in place. At the supervisors’ meeting that I attended and spoke at, there were over 20 residents of JCC opposing this construction and asking for a referendum so the people can vote on it. There was not one person in favor of the almost quarter-billion-dollar outlay. The supervisors waved their hands and said those speaking are not representative of the county as a whole. Welcome to the new England! Tyranny at its finest. Incomes in JCC are going up 3% per year but taxes and costs are rising 7-10% a year to finance this building binge. Simple math that my 12-year-old can easily do shows this cannot be sustained. We do not need to look at the federal or state government to be concerned about a tyrannical, oppressive government taking away our freedoms. We only need to look down the street to the James City County Board of Supervisors and ask, how can such tyranny visit our nice community?"
